GALA initially began advocacy efforts on behalf of Nigerian victims of human trafficking residing in Italy. We recognize that people flee their countries of origin because of economic hardship, as well as due to political strife and civil unrest. Those who flee due to political unrest are generally allowed to resettle in developed countries as refugees, or in some cases given asylum by the host nation; while those immigrants who are economic refugees generally are not afforded any legal respite — despite the fact that they are fleeing starvation and untold suffering in their countries of origin. This distinction is fundamentally unjust. And, it facilitates human trafficking. GALA believes that a more wholistic response is necessary to end human trafficking not just the prosecution of the criminals who prey on the poor and vulnerable. GALA is open to new collaborations and partnerships both to advocate both for the rights of victims, as well as to create decent jobs for them; wherever they may choose to reside.
